Historic Como beach club at risk
The future of Lido Villa Olmo could be without its current and historic manager, Maurizio Locatelli, who has been running the beach establishment located in the municipal territory of Como since 1981 and has been working here since 1973, having started at the time as a lifeguard.
“The municipal administration announced to me that it’s going to tender. I’ll almost certainly participate, but I’m not sure I’ll be the one managing the lido next year,” Locatelli told us. And he added: “It’s a shame, because I would have liked to continue until retirement and there wasn’t much time left”.
Locatelli had won the bid in 1981 together with his then partner Giorgio Porta, with whom he shared a professional journey that was interrupted only last year and only because unfortunately Porta passed away. It must be said that the management of the Como beach club was interrupted for a year in 2017, when Locatelli and Porta came third in the tender called by the Municipality but were able to return to the helm twelve months after the forced farewell and the subsequent withdrawal of the company that had replaced them in the business. And who knows if all this couldn’t happen again in 2026. Meanwhile, however, Lido Villa Olmo is preparing to close a good bathing season, thanks also to the charm of Lake Como and its international success.
Lido Villa Olmo has about two hundred sun loungers and a hundred deck chairs arranged on two levels: the pool level, suitable for a clientele of families and children, and the lakefront level with imported sand. The descent to the lake was created in 2014 when Lake Como became suitable for swimming, after years of bans imposed due to past industrial discharges, while today the water quality is excellent. There are also two pools, one 25 meters and the other 12.5 meters, built in 1971 for the occasion of It’s a Knockout. The offer is completed by the beach chiringuito and the privé area with jacuzzi. Lunch? “Those who want to can bring it directly from home, it’s not a problem for us,” says Locatelli. Those who instead want to take advantage of the restaurant service can choose from various dishes, among which the pinsa stands out. Prices for two sun loungers vary between 40 and 44 euros, but there’s also the possibility of entering with your own beach towel paying 12 euros per person (8 euros in the afternoon). For the privé space the price rises to 30 euros per person. Swimming caps are mandatory in the pool.
