Famous for being the only – until proven otherwise – Italian beach establishment where gender separation is enforced, with men required to stay on the right side and women (with children, who can however stay wherever they prefer regardless of gender) on the left side with a protective barrier extending to the sea, La Lanterna di Trieste, known as “El Pedocin”, today presented new projects aimed at strengthening inclusion and its cultural offerings.

There’s the Seatrac Mover, a device that allows people with disabilities to access the sea independently. There are also two reading points with bookcrossing areas, designed to promote reading and book sharing during beach stays. These initiatives, as reported by the online newspaper Triesteallnews, are part of the enhancement process of this historic city establishment, increasingly focused on offering accessible services and socialization opportunities for users of all ages.

The project presentation was attended by Trieste Municipality’s councilor for real estate and sports policies, Elisa Lodi, along with councilor for services and social policies Massimo Tognolli, councilor for education and family Maurizio De Blasio, and the manager responsible for beach establishments, equipped free beaches and parking facilities, Cristina Sirugo.

Inaugurated in 1903, Pedocin continues to satisfy its customers. A recent satisfaction survey administered to users in May showed an overall average rating of 4.6 out of 5. Among the most appreciated aspects were staff courtesy (66.1%), environmental comfort (51.8%) and cleanliness of spaces (48.2%), while opening hours received the maximum score of 5 out of 5.
