La Fontelina, Capri
In front of the Faraglioni, there’s a sort of small ancient world, frequented by current manager Gaetano Gargiulo since he was seven years old

The name means “the sources of linen,” because this place was frequented by the women of Capri to soak linen leaves in the natural pools that formed along the cliffs. That linen was then used to produce clothes and fishing nets. Founded in: 1949. The establishment is accessed by going down from the center of Capri towards the Faraglioni and turning right just before reaching the island’s symbols, but for those who don’t want or can’t walk, there’s a paid taxi boat service from Marina Piccola. We’re in a sort of small ancient world, frequented by current manager Gaetano Gargiulo since he was seven years old; back then he was a child receiving gifts from the parents of current clients, to whom he now gives gifts. The staff is confirmed every season, guests return, and the best advertising La Fontelina relies on is word of mouth. This is a selective place, based both on price and restrictive rules applied for access to the beach club. An example? Reservations are made exclusively online and for a minimum of three days, a move that tends to exclude occasional visitors, who however have the possibility to check for available spots a couple of days before the date they’d like to enter. No problem, however, for the restaurant: just make a reservation, if there’s space, to enjoy the fresh fish prepared by cook Mario, while clients’ attention is inevitably drawn to the raw fish and oyster counters. Prices are not budget-friendly for either food or wine, but in Capri and in this location, what else can you expect? On the beach we find wooden deck chairs and characteristic umbrellas, both in white and blue stripes.
